If you currently reside in a cold and wet part of the world, you probably dream about what life would be like if you woke up every morning to hot sunshine and endless blue skies. But the reality is not always quite as nice as you might imagine. Living in a hot climate comes with its own set of problems, not least the difficulties in staying cool when the temperature is hitting the high nineties. So how can you make life a little more bearable?
Invest in Air Conditioning
Air conditioning can make life in a hot climate a lot more bearable. Instead of lying awake every night, unable to sleep because the sheets are sticking to your hot, sweaty skin, you can enjoy a restful night in a pleasantly cool bedroom. As long as you close the doors and windows, air conditioning will help to keep your home at a nice temperature. Some people choose to have air con throughout the house, but as an absolute minimum, buy air con units for the bedrooms.
A Home with a Pool
A swimming pool is a great way to stay cool during the heat of the summer, so if you have to choose between a home with or without a pool always pick the one with the pool. Swimming pools allow you to take a dip when you are too hot. A quick swim will help to cool you down and restore the equilibrium. Just be careful not to eat and drink in the pool, even if you are boiling hot—it can be dangerous to do so and you may choke in the water.
Heavy blinds are essential if you want to keep the sun out. Choose blinds with a reflective lining for maximum protection. Retractable window shades are also very useful for patio doors and large windows overlooking balconies or terraces. When the sun is at its highest, pull down the shade and keep the sun out, as this will allow you to stay cooler during the day. You can also install sunshades on bedroom windows.
It is impossible to get much done during the hottest part of the day, which is why businesses in hot countries open early while the temperature is relatively cool, shut down around noon, and then reopen once again later in the afternoon. This might seem strange if you are not used to a different pace of life, but it really is the best way to cope with the heat. Take the opportunity to have midday snoozes or simply relax out of the heat. You can catch up on your chores once things have cooled down later.
Ceiling fans help to circulate air when it is hot. This can make it easier to sleep at night. If you are not lucky enough to have air conditioning, a ceiling fan in the bedroom should help you catch at least some rest. Make sure you leave the window open (as long as the bugs can’t get in) to help the air move around more.
It can take a while to get used to living in a hot climate, but eventually you should adjust. Stay out of the sun at the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of cold drinks, and you will be fine.
