Getting to sleep can be an uphill struggle, don’t you think?! If you are one of the millions of people that suffer from insomnia then you are not alone. It’s a very common affliction, and those that don’t suffer don’t understand just what an impact it has on your everyday life. If you don’t get enough sleep then you feel like you are living half a life – you will be constantly tired and grumpy, you’ll find it hard to concentrate in the waking hours and you will be very short on energy too. It’s hard to break the cycle, but the good news is that there are loads of things you can do to maximize your chances of a good night’s sleep, and we’ll give you a few of them here:
Get the Right Kit
You’ll be surprised at how much difference your bed, duvet and pillow make. If you bed is not up to scratch then it’s time you upgraded. It might be expensive but what price can you put on a good night’s sleep? Get a memory foam mattress that is built to last, and also invest in some memory foam pillows. You will be amazed at how much more comfortable they are. Finally, get some really good quality linen and a brand new duvet cover. Transform your bed into a haven of tranquility, and make sure your bedroom is free of clutter and mess to aid a good night’s sleep.
Cast Your Worries Aside
Often the thing that keeps us awake is our mind churning over, worrying about this and that. Although there is not much you can do in the middle of the night to solve your problems, this doesn’t stop you from worrying about them. To combat this, keep a pen and paper by your bed, so if you are lying in bed awake and worrying then just write your concerns down. This will help you to drop off as you won’t be worrying about forgetting what you’ve been thinking about on top of it all! Put the paper in another room once you’ve made your list if it makes you stop worrying.
Lavender Is Your Best Friend
Rather than going for strong sleeping tablets, try some herbal ones instead. Often they have just the same effect, but with less harmful ingredients. Take them an hour before you go to bed. Don’t drink alcohol as it will impair your night’s sleep. Lavender is our secret trick – get some lavender essential oil and put it on a tissue under your pillow. Lavender has brilliant healing properties and a little under your pillow will help you doze off. An alternative way to do it is to get a little sachet and put some dried lavender in it. Drifting off to the feint scent of lavender is a wonderful way to get to sleep.
Getting more sleep will have a massively positive impact on your day to day life, so commit yourself to finding ways to solve the problem – and sleep well!
